What is a “Tar & Gravel roof?

In reality the “tar & gravel” roofs are actually hot asphalt roofs. Asphalt is used instead of tar, but the name has stuck. A asphalt and gravel roof consists of layers of asphalt and felt paper each layered adhered with applications of molten asphalt. The laminated layers get a top finish of gravel, some of the gravel becomes embedded in the hot asphalt, and some of which lay loose on the surface of the roof. The purpose of the gravel is to shield the asphalt from the damaging effect of sun exposure. These are good roofs but very difficult to repair.

WARNING:  Most “tar and gravel” roofs are installed over insulation board fasten to a metal deck. When reroofing ALL components have to be replaced, requiring a very large budget or insurance settlement. Check with your contractor and make sure there are no change orders!
